Amongst the red rocks of Sedona, there’s one formation that stands out – a natural sandstone butte that’s one of the most photographed sights in Arizona! Cathedral Rock is stunning, whether you get a view of it or you tackle the hike to the summit and take in the panoramic views of the desert. But, it’s a popular location, and though the hike may seem short, it’s pretty strenuous – so there are a few things you need to know before you decide to tie the knot here! This Cathedral Rock elopement guide will help you plan your day, prepare you for the adventure, and give you some tips for an incredible, adventurous wedding.
About the Cathedral Rock Hiking Trail
One important thing to know before deciding to elope at Cathedral Rock is that there is some hiking required. The Cathedral Rock hiking trail is 1.2 miles roundtrip, but that comes with 742 feet of elevation gain! So don’t be fooled by the relatively low mileage – the hike is steep, and requires some scrambling on rocks that can be slippery. Because of this, I only recommend this trail for experienced hikers! It’s important to know what you’re getting into and to consider your abilities and experience anytime you get outside, but especially on your elopement day, you don’t want to find yourself in over your head.
The Best Time for a Cathedral Rock Elopement
Choosing when to elope will affect your day, since the weather in Sedona changes a lot throughout the year. It’s in the high desert, so it might not get as hot as some other places to elope in Arizona, but summers can still be in the high 90s, sometimes even triple digits during the day. This isn’t comfortable for outdoor adventures, and can be downright dangerous.
In the fall, the weather is milder, and this is perfect for a Cathedral Rock elopement! By October and November, highs are much more reasonable, and the weather is great for hiking.
Winter is the least popular time for visitors in Sedona, which is especially important for a popular hike like this one. Night time temperatures can dip below freezing, and snow dusts the landscape occasionally. Daytime temperatures are usually in the high 50s, which can be nice.
Spring weather is great for hiking elopements as well, but it’s the busiest time in Sedona. Temperatures are comfortable, wildflowers bloom in the desert, and more people will be out and about to enjoy this season.
But, though season and time of year is important, it’s also key to consider that this is a really popular hike. Pretty much any time of year, if you’re hiking during the day, there will be crowds. A likely reason that you chose to elope instead of having a big wedding is for the privacy, and exchanging vows surrounded by people just isn’t the same. If you plan a Cathedral Rock elopement, I really recommend that you plan your ceremony for a weekday (Monday through Wednesday actually, and make sure to read the next section to find out why!), and that you have your ceremony at sunrise. This is your best bet for a more secluded elopement ceremony! Putting on a headlamp and hitting the trail early in the morning is a unique adventure in itself, and you’ll get to watch the sun rise over the red rocks as you say your “I do’s” – the early wake up call is worth it!
How to Get to Cathedral Rock
The Cathedral Rock trailhead is about four miles north of Sedona, and the parking lot is on Back O Beyond Road. It’s a quick drive, but the parking lot is sometimes closed – and when it is open, it’s extremely busy, so parking is another reason to elope at sunrise!
The parking lot closes when the Sedona Shuttle is running. Route 15 is the one you take for Cathedral Rock, and the shuttle goes from a park and ride to the Cathedral Rock trailhead, the Little Horse trailhead, and back to the park and ride. The shuttle runs year round from Thursday to Sunday, 7 AM to 5:30 PM, and some additional days for holidays and other busy times of year. The parking lot is closed while the shuttle is running, so plan accordingly!
Cathedral Rock Elopement Fees and Permits
Anyone who parks at the Cathedral Rock trail needs a Red Rock Pass. A day pass costs $5 per car, and can be purchased at the trailhead. You can also get a 7 day pass for $15, or a pass for the year for $20. You can get these online at Recreation.gov, and this can be a good option if you want to spend some time in Sedona and explore more trails. An America the Beautiful Pass, which is an annual pass to the national parks, is accepted here as well, so bring that if you have one!
Many elopement locations require a special use permit for ceremonies, but currently, Cathedral Rock elopements do not need any permits, just the parking fee! This can change, however, especially with a location as popular as this one, so make sure you double check that a permit isn’t required. As your elopement photographer, I’ll handle this and check with the Red Rock Forest Service, and make sure you have all the info you need!
An Alternative to a Cathedral Rock Elopement
The Cathedral Rock hike is gorgeous, and it’s an iconic Sedona experience. However, it’s also busy! If you want gorgeous views but aren’t super stoked about how popular this location is, I have an alternative for you.
Secret Slick Rock is 10 miles away, is much less busy, and the hike is easier! From the trail, you get stunning views of Cathedral Rock, so it’s beautiful scenery, without the crowds.
There are also plenty of other elopement locations in and around Sedona, from popular trails to off the beaten path spots, so we’ll find the perfect one for you!
