Merry Go Round Rock is one of the most dramatic elopement locations in Sedona, with cliffs, red rock layers, and the sweeping views across the canyon that make it an absolutely unreal spot to exchange vows in. If you’re dreaming of an adventurous wedding ceremony, this place delivers! Getting there is part of the adventure, so this guide breaks down everything you need to know to plan a Merry Go Round Rock elopement – the road, timing, and more.
How to Get to Merry Go Round Rock
Merry Go Round Rock is on Schnebly Hill Road, a rugged forest service road above Sedona. The number one thing couples need to know about tying the knot here is that you need a capable off-road vehicle!
Hiking there is technically possible, but not recommended – the trail is long, steep, and goes up a wash. It’s also parallel to the 4×4 access road, so it’s loud and dusty, and just not as fun as driving.
Schenbly Hill Road is rough and rocky – a regular SUV won’t cut it! You need a high clearance 4×4. You can rent a Jeep from somewhere like Barlow Adventures, or book a Pink Jeep Tour if you’re not comfortable driving yourself. Taking your own vehicle is an option too, if you have one – just make sure it’s truly set up for off roading. The drive isn’t too technical, but it’s very rutted and rocky, so some expereince is required.
The drive up to Merry Go Round Rock takes around 45 minutes (not including time spent stopping for photos, which you’ll want to do!) and you can expect bouncing, rocking, and dust. The drive is definitely part of the adventure – one that’s not recommended for people who get carsick! The road conditions can also change depending on weather and after a rainstorm, so always add extra time in case things are slower than expected.

The Best Time for a Merry Go Round Rock Elopement
Choosing when to elope is important, from season to time of day.
Sedona is in the high desert, so it won’t get as hot as some other places in Arizona, but summers can still be in the high 90s during the day – not ideal for an outdoor elopement.
In the fall and spring, the weather is a lot more mild, so these can be great times for a Merry Go Round Rock elopement. Keep in mind that spring is the most popular time to visit Sedona, so there will likely be a lot of people around.
While Sedona – and Merry Go Round Rock – is unlikely to ever be truly empty, winter is the least popular time for people to visit. While it’s not totally private, it’s a little off the beaten path and somewhat lesser known than some popular Sedona spots like Cathedral Rock. Day time temperatures are usually in the high 50s, while night time temps can occasionally dip below freezing.
Along with the weather and seasons, it’s also important to consider the day of the week that you elope! I always recommend that couples elope on a weekday, since these will always be less crowded than weekends, which bring lots of Jeeps, off-road tours, and sightseeing groups. Just make sure to avoid holidays!
The sun comes up behind the rock formations, so sunrises aren’t as magical at Merry Go Round Rock as sunsets are. Golden hour here is amazing, and you get warm light hitting the cliffs across the canyon – so planning your ceremony for sunset is definitely the way to go! After the sun dips, the whole landscape glows with soft light.

Permits and Rules for Eloping at Merry Go Round Rock
Currently, there is no permit required for ceremonies at Merry Go Round Rock. This could possibly change in the future, so it’s always best to confirm and make sure you have the most up to date information! As an elopement photographer, part of my job is helping you navigate permitting, so I’ll let you know if there’s anything you need to do.
When you tie the knot here, make sure to follow Leave No Trace principles. Leave No Trace (LNT) basically means that we should take care of the land and always leave it better than we found it. Keep elopement ceremonies small, avoid any structures or setups, be respectful of other visitors, and don’t leave anything behind! This ensures that these places stay beautiful, and that they stay open to the public and open for adventure elopements.

Tips for Your Merry Go Round Rock Elopement
Here are some tips to make sure your Merry Go Round Rock elopement goes smoothly!
Keep the Guest List Small
There isn’t a ton of parking, and this location is best for smaller ceremonies. If you’re planning to invite guests, I recommend no more than 10-15 people. Merry Go Round Rock is dog friendly, as long as they’re leashed, but keep in mind the bumpy drive and the steep cliffs and dropoffs at the top – make sure your dog doesn’t mind cars and isn’t a bolter!
Make Bookings Early
You’ll want to secure your 4×4 vehicle early, because off roading is popular in Sedona. Make sure to make the bookings early on, whether you’re renting a vehicle or booking a tour. Spring and fall are peak season, so this is especially important then!
Dress Comfortably
Make sure that you’ll be able to climb onto rock shelves and walk around easily! Comfortable shoes with good grip are essential – there isn’t a lot of hiking required, but it’s a short walk from the parking area to the overlook, and there are other photo spots and cool views nearby. Wind can sometimes make it feel pretty chilly up there, so bring some layers too!
